Studio Store Releases Limited Edition Box Set of Photo Postcards from Harlem Postcards Collection

HARLEM, NEW YORK, NY, DECEMBER 12, 2024 — The Studio Museum in Harlem is thrilled to release the Harlem Postcards Box Set, an exclusive and editioned collection of photo postcards that spans over twenty years of the Museum’s Harlem Postcards project, an initiative that invites contemporary artists of diverse backgrounds to reflect on Harlem as a site of cultural and historical influence through a photographic lens. Within an acrylic container designed especially for this collection, each box set contains a unique selection of one hundred black-and-white and color postcards from a range of one hundred and thirty-nine artists. No set is the same. Aiming their cameras at the streets, stages, stoops, and sanctuaries of Harlem, each artist captures a multi-perspective view of Harlem that is animated, joyous, and monumental. As the Museum approaches the opening of its first purpose-built building, the Harlem Postcards Box Set serves as an invaluable institutional archive that celebrates the Museum’s surrounding neighborhood and community.

Conceived in 2002, Harlem Postcards is a project that invites contemporary artists of diverse backgrounds to reflect on Harlem as a site of cultural activity, political vitality, visual stimuli, artistic contemplation, and creative production. Representing intimate and dynamic perspectives of Harlem, the images reflect the changing nature of this vibrant community through the idiosyncratic visions of contemporary artists.

Working with the Studio Museum in Harlem's Curatorial Department, Studio Store finds inspiration in the Museum’s collection, the Harlem community, and contemporary artists and makers. Studio Store’s quarterly selection process includes identifying Black-owned or operated, Harlem-based, or Studio Museum–adjacent businesses that create products surrounding Black culture, history, and art. Once identified, products are chosen based on a spectrum of relevance, presence of intentional design, standout illustration, and nuanced storytelling. Founded in 1968 by a diverse group of artists, community activists, and philanthropists, the Studio Museum in Harlem is internationally known for its catalytic role in promoting the work of artists of African descent.
