Explore and interact with art, artists, and community

A mom and dad sit at a table with their daughter, who is holding a marker and focusing intently on her artwork. The table is filled with various art supplies, including markers and paper. The parents watch her with interest and encouragement, creating a warm and supportive atmosphere as they engage in the art project together.

Adult Programs

From artist talks and art-making workshops to film screenings, readings, and performances, our programs seek to create entry points and promote broader accessibility for engaging with art. We aim to expand ideas, deepen relationships, and showcase the relevance and historical impact of art made by artists of African descent through conversations with artists, activists, curators, educators, and more.

Kids and Families

The Studio Museum in Harlem acknowledges the importance of families spending time together. Nurturing bonds between people who identify as family, the Museum offers programs and experiences for families to share in viewing, discussing, and creating art. Creative engagement with visual art provides children and families with opportunities to foster understanding and togetherness.

Teen Programs at the Studio Museum provide a safe environment for teens to express themselves creatively. Programs offer students the opportunity to meet and converse with prominent visual artists, express their ideas in discussions, participate in tours and hands-on workshops, and develop important communication and critical thinking skills.

Expanding the Walls: Making Connections Between Photography, History, and Community is a free eight-month photography-based program.

School Partnerships

School partnerships reflect the Studio Museum’s deep commitment to schools in Harlem and across New York City. Since its founding in 1968, the Museum has prioritized in-school partnerships that focus on connecting artists with the whole school community, including students, parents, educators, and administrators.

School partnerships engage students in Pre-K–12th grade, with transitional learning, alternative education, and continuing education programs. We work closely with educators of all disciplines, families, school counselors, afterschool programs, and school leadership to connect to the school ecosystem. Each partnership is uniquely built in collaboration with the Museum’s teachers, Artist Educators, and museum education staff. Partnerships are informed by the diverse creative practices of the Studio Museum’s innovative group of practicing Artist Educators who facilitate each partnership.
