For the ninth annual Lea K. Green Artist Talk, the Studio Museum in Harlem is proud to honor Karon Davis. The evening’s program will feature a conversation between Davis and Thelma Golden, Ford Foundation Director and Chief Curator of the Studio Museum in Harlem.

In this conversation, Davis and Golden will delve into the artist’s creative process and conceptual approach, discussing how Davis’s work engages with storytelling, materiality, and the emotional resonance of form.

The Studio Museum in Harlem's annual Lea K. Green Artist Talk brings together exceptional artists and cultural luminaries annually for critical dialogues on art and society. Previous honorees for the Lea K. Green Artist Talk include Caroline Kent (2024), Sanford Biggers (2022), vanessa german (2021), Hank Willis Thomas (2020), Dawoud Bey (2019), Amy Sherald (2018), Jordan Casteel (2017), and Carrie Mae Weems (2016).

Karon Davis (b. 1977, Reno, Nevada) creates sculptures and multimedia installations that touch on issues of history, race, and violence in the United States, using materials as varied as plaster strips, chicken wire, glass, and readymade objects. Drawing on her background in theater and film, Davis creates haunting tableaux inhabited by protagonists both historical and imagined. The figures are created using the artist’s unique plaster method, amalgamations of life-size casts taken from friends and family as well as her own body. The material reflects her longtime interest in ancient Egyptian mummification practices, using wrapping to memorialize different bodies and their complex histories.
