Explore the transformative quality of sound in a two-night performance series inspired by the latest inHarlem exhibition Dozie Kanu: Function. On the first evening, artists chukwumaa and Ari Melenciano perform live in an abstract dialogue with the works on view. The performances also feature a playlist curated by exhibiting artist Dozie Kanu. Listen to the playlist here.

Born in Lagos, Nigeria and raised in Prince George’s County, Maryland, chukwumaamakes soft sculptures, techno-divining performances and other media experiments about liminal characters, Igbo trickster myths and non-linear narratives. He has performed and exhibited at MoMA PS1, The Corcoran Museum, Yale Union, ICA London, and The Kitchen. In 2018, chukwumaa toured live electronic music performances across North America and Europe, both as supporting DJ for MHYSA and as a part of SCRAAATCH. chukwumaa received a BA in Studio Art from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2012 and an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania in 2016, where he received the Charles Addams Memorial Prize.

Ari Melenciano is a Brooklyn-based artist, designer, creative technologist, researcher, and futurist, who is passionate about exploring the relationships between various forms of design and the human experience. Currently, her research lies at the intersections of human-computer interactive technologies, social impacts of technology, culture, sound, multisensory experiential design, experimental pedagogy and speculative design. She is the founder of Afrotectopia, a social institution fostering interdisciplinary innovation at the intersections of art, design, technology, Black culture and activism. Ari also teaches design, technology and society at NYU and the Pratt Institute. She is currently a Human-In-Residence at NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program and one of the inaugural Future Imagination Fund Fellows of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.

Artists on Artists  invites creatives from all backgrounds—including poets, musicians, performers, and dancers—to respond to works on view through the lens of their own practices and experiences. This experimental, in-gallery program promotes dynamic engagement with contemporary art and artists.
