Alternating colored lights in programmed patterns that recall traffic signals and theater marquees, Tom Lloyd’s sculptures embraced abstraction at a time when audiences expected works by artists of African descent to be socially relevant and representational. Moussakoo was featured in Electronic Refractions II, a solo exhibition of Lloyd’s work that was the inaugural show at the Studio Museum in Harlem when it opened in 1968. Three of the four original motors were lost before the work entered the Museum’s collection in 1996, so the pattern seen here is an approximation of its programming.
