Dr. William Pickens, Sr., depicted here in painted plaster, was Field Secretary and then Director of Branches for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in the 1920s and 30s. An activist herself and a key figure in the Harlem Renaissance, Augusta Savage portrays Pickens with a calm and resolute expression. She earned a reputation in the 1920s for her lifelike and ennobling portraits, and became an influential teacher to artists including Robert Blackburn and Jacob Lawrence.
