This pastel work, part of a series, is a departure from Lynette Yiadom-Boakye’s usual artistic practice. Best known for her large-scale oil paintings of fictional figures that exist outside of a fixed narrative, Yiadom-Boakye here sketches from life, including background details and titles that help situate the figures in specific times and locations. She found her subjects in various locations throughout New York City, including Harlem. The resulting works capture intimate moments of conversation, extracted from the normal cacophony of the city.
