Biography

Timothy Yanick Hunter (b. 1990, Toronto, Canada) lives and works in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He uses research, recording, and sampling methodologies to explore the experiential and aesthetic dimensions of the Black diaspora. References that range from historical photographs from museum archives to ephemera from obscure corners of the Internet are overlaid with music and spoken recordings, expressing Hunter’s interest in alternative modes of making and thinking about memory, reproduction, temporality, and the unknowable.

Hunter has been an artist in residence at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, Portland, OR; and Black Rock Senegal, Dakar. He was included in the 2022 Toronto Biennial of Art and longlisted for the 2024 Sobey Art Award. He has exhibited nationally and internationally at Cooper Cole, Gallery 44, and A Space Gallery, all Toronto; Oakville Galleries, Oakville, Canada; Centre Clark, Montreal; Metro 54, Amsterdam; ILY2, Portland, OR; Kendra Jayne Patrick, Bern, Switzerland; and PADA Studios, Barreiro, Portugal; Third Born, Mexico City; among others. His work is in the permanent collections of the Studio Museum in Harlem and the National Gallery of Canada. Hunter received his BA from the University of Toronto.
