Biography

Realizing that the histories of people around her were being lost or misconstrued, Endia Beal began photographing people to tell their stories. Inspired by her experiences working in a professional setting as a Black woman surrounded by mostly white men, and by the experiences of her students entering the job market, she often focuses on Black women in corporate spaces.

Beal began making art in high school to process the pain of the death of a loved one. She later took her first photography class at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. Drawn to the immediacy of photography and its capacity for collaboration with subjects, she continued to study the medium. Beal obtained a BA in studio art and art history from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 2008, and an MFA in photography from Yale University in 2013. She has had solo exhibitions at institutions including Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut, Heidelberg, Germany (2021); Carl-Schurz-Haus, Breisgau, Germany (2020); and Amerikahaus, Munich, Germany (2019); and has participated in group exhibitions at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Winston-Salem, North Carolina (2020); McColl Center for Art + Innovation, Charlotte, North Carolina (2019); and the Nasher Museum of Art, Durham, North Carolina (2018). Beal is a 2019 Center for Curatorial Leadership Fellow and has completed residencies at Harvard Art Museums (2019); McColl Center for Art + Innovation (2015); and the Center for Photography at Woodstock (2013). Beal entered the Studio Museum in Harlem collection in 2018.
